In separate statements, both opposition leaders described the result as more than just a football triumph, saying it represented a moment of national pride and unity for Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
Atiku hailed the performance as a proud moment for the country, praising the team’s determination and the renewed hope their display has sparked across the nation.
“A proud night for our nation. I celebrate the Super Eagles on their solid 2–0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON quarter-final,” Atiku said. “Your fighting spirit has once again lifted the hopes of millions of Nigerians. Keep soaring — we are firmly behind you.”
Peter Obi, in his message, said the Super Eagles’ performance sent a strong signal to other contenders at the tournament. He commended the team’s efficiency in attack and discipline in defence, describing the win as a reward for over 200 million Nigerians.
“Huge congratulations to our dear Super Eagles for flying high over the Desert Warriors,” Obi said. “A 2–0 victory that sends a clear message to the rest of the continent. The AFCON trophy is within reach. Let’s take this momentum straight into the semi-finals.”
