The ECOWAS Commission, in collaboration with the European Union, Expertise France, and key implementing partners, convened a two-day strategic meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, under the Africa-Europe Partnership to Exchange on Education Reforms (PEERs) initiative.
The meeting brought together education stakeholders from across West and East Africa to foster stronger inter-regional collaboration in the design and implementation of equitable, inclusive, gender-responsive, green, and digital education policies, with a strong emphasis on basic education.
Key areas of discussion included:
The ECOWAS Nnamdi Azikiwe Academic Mobility Scheme (ENAAMS)
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
The harmonisation of education systems across Africa
Strategies to lay a solid foundation for transformative reforms in basic education
Participants reaffirmed the importance of joint ownership of the PEERs project. ECOWAS will serve as regional coordinator, while Expertise France has undertaken a comprehensive situation analysis to inform ongoing policy dialogue and implementation.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening educational cooperation between Africa and Europe and exploring the possibility of presenting the PEERs project at the upcoming 2025 ADEA Triennial Conference.
