Nigerian men traveling without family members are no longer eligible for tourist or transit visas to Qatar, following new entry restrictions imposed by the Qatari Ministry of Interior.

The policy, which came into effect on September 5, 2025, applies to both new and pending visa applications, effectively barring solo male travelers from entering the Gulf nation unless accompanied by family.

Under the updated requirements, only women and families are permitted to apply for visas. Additionally, applicants must provide proof of a confirmed return transfer and accommodation exclusively in five-star hotels before their applications are considered.

Qatari authorities say the measures are aimed at addressing the growing issue of visa overstays.

The decision carries immediate consequences for Nigerian nationals who frequently use Doha as a transit hub to Asia and Europe, as well as for business professionals and students pursuing opportunities in Qatar.

The move has raised concerns over its potential diplomatic and economic impact. Past efforts to ease travel restrictions between both countries included bilateral talks and diplomatic appeals, notably by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki in 2019 and former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika in 2023.

With these new rules, independent travel for Nigerian men to Qatar has effectively been suspended, imposing further constraints on mobility and raising travel costs.
