A high-level Nigerian delegation sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held a crucial meeting with officials of the UK Ministry of Justice on Monday to discuss the case of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who has been in British custody since March 2023.

The delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, signified a renewed diplomatic engagement by the Tinubu administration over the high-profile case.

Following the talks, the Nigerian officials were received at the Nigerian High Commission in Londonby the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu.

The diplomatic move comes amid growing discussions between Nigeria and the United Kingdom on legal cooperation and the treatment of Nigerian nationals facing prosecution abroad.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a medical doctor were convicted in March 2023 for conspiring to traffic a young man to the UK for organ harvesting  which was a violation of the UK Modern Slavery Act.

The former Deputy Senate President was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, marking the first conviction of its kind under the law and drawing global attention to issues of human trafficking and abuse of power.
