The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Kingdom of Spain reaffirmed their commitment to regional diplomacy and human development during a graduation ceremony held at the prestigious Diplomatic Academy of Madrid.
Prof. Fatou Sow SARR, Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs at ECOWAS, attended the event, marking the successful completion of the sixth edition of the Master’s Programme in Diplomacy and International Relations. She was accompanied by Dr. Roland KOUAKOU, Acting Director and Programme Coordinator at ECOWAS.
The programme, established under the ECOWAS-SPAIN Scholarship initiative, offers young diplomats from ECOWAS Member States a unique opportunity to advance their expertise in international diplomacy, global affairs, and bilateral cooperation.
Strengthening West Africa-Europe Diplomatic Partnerships
While in Madrid, Prof. Fatou Sow SARR held high-level working sessions with key Spanish officials, including H.E. Mr. Diego Martínez-Belío, Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation. She also met with Ms. Ximena Sartori Mana, Head of the Sub-Saharan Africa Cooperation Department at the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
The discussions provided a platform to review ongoing projects and strategic programmes under the ECOWAS Directorate for Human Development and Social Affairs. Both parties explored avenues for deepening collaboration in areas such as education, youth empowerment, and capacity building for young West African diplomats.
Promoting International Diplomacy Education for West African Youth
The ECOWAS-SPAIN Scholarship Programme continues to serve as a cornerstone for fostering cross-cultural understanding and professional development among emerging West African leaders in diplomacy. The initiative underscores both ECOWAS and Spain’s shared commitment to promoting peace, regional integration, and international cooperation.
As Prof. Fatou Sow SARR emphasized, “Investing in young diplomats is investing in the future stability and prosperity of our region.”
