Rebel forces have reportedly taken control of the strategic city of Uvira in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), despite a recent peace agreement mediated by US President Donald Trump.
The M23 rebel group claims to have “liberated” the city, while residents report heavy artillery fire and widespread gunfire, creating a chaotic and dangerous environment.
Uvira, located near the Burundian border, has been a government-held stronghold in the mineral-rich region. The rebel advance has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with thousands fleeing across the border into Burundi. To date, over 200,000 people have been displaced, and at least 74 civilians have been killed.
The international community, including the United States and the European Union, has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Rwanda, accused of supporting the M23 rebels, denies involvement, while the DRC government alleges that Rwanda’s actions violate the recently brokered peace deal.
