The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has ordered the immediate removal of all non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorized checkpoints on major highways across the country, citing operational challenges and security risks.

The directive was contained in an internal memo dated December 5 and signed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

The DHQ expressed concern over the “growing proliferation of non-essential static roadblocks and checkpoints along several routes within the Joint Operational Area (JOA).”

According to the memo, while securing major highways remains a priority, the unchecked spread of roadblocks has begun to “undermine operational efficiency, disrupt freedom of movement for both security forces and civilians, and expose troops to unnecessary risks.”

Highways affected by the directive include: Abuja–Lokoja–Ajaokuta–Idah–Otukpa–Obollo Afor–Enugu; Abuja–Lokoja–Obajana–Kabba–Omuo–Ekiti–Ikole Ekiti; Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Okpella–Auchi–Benin; Abuja–Kaduna–Kano and Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba–Niger Bridge

The DHQ instructed all Theatre and Formation Commanders to immediately dismantle unauthorized checkpoints and maintain only approved control points.

The memo further directed commanders to prioritize mobile, intelligence-driven operations, emphasizing aggressive patrols and enhanced human intelligence gathering along key routes.

This development comes amid rising public concern over national security and the effectiveness of current road security strategies.
