Father of former NLC President Ayuba Wabba, passes away at 90

Jidayi Filibus Asarya Wabba, father of the immediate past President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and former President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC Global), Dr. Ayuba Wabba, has passed away.

He reportedly died on January 8, 2026, at the age of 90.

In a statement released by the family, the late Wabba was described as a devout Christian, retired military officer, and respected community leader.

He served in the Nigerian Army for 35 years before retiring from active service and dedicating his life to community development and traditional leadership.

He was the District Head of Sabongari-Puba in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, where he championed self-help projects, mentored young people, and offered guidance at elders’ council meetings.

His humility, discipline, and commitment to service earned him widespread respect within and beyond his community.

The deceased is survived by his wife, 11 children, and 26 grandchildren, including Comrade Ayuba Wabba, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s labour movement and holder of the traditional title of Barden Askira (Chief Defender) of the Askira Emirate.

Burial arrangements indicate that the late elder will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in his hometown of Sabongari-Puba, Askira/Uba LGA, Borno State.

Reacting to his passing, the Emir of Askira, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mai Abdullahi Ibn Askirama, described the late Wabba as a man whose life was defined by service, discipline, and wise counsel. He noted that his courage and leadership would continue to inspire his family and the wider community.

Dr. Ayuba Wabba and members of his family are mourning the loss of a patriarch whose legacy of integrity and public service left an indelible mark on both military and civic life in Borno State.
