The Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local governance and ensuring the full implementation of local government autonomy across Nigeria.

Speaking at the Local Government Development Summit in Abuja, Minister Zaphaniah Jisalo emphasized that the recent Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy presents a historic opportunity to reshape grassroots governance. The event, themed “The Supreme Court Ruling on Local Government Autonomy and the Future of Local Government Administration and Grassroots Development,” focused on strategies to empower local authorities with decision-making power and direct access to resources.

Represented by Dr. Onwusoro Ihemelandu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Jisalo highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening grassroots governance in line with President Bola Tinubu’s 8-Point Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that the Ministry plans to collaborate with local governments, development agencies, and private sector stakeholders to enhance capacity building, infrastructure development, and service delivery.

The summit, organized by the Committee on States and Local Government Administration, seeks to provide a comprehensive roadmap for the effective implementation of local government autonomy, ensuring sustainable development at the grassroot level.
