House of Reps Summons Customs Boss, Threatens Arrest of NIMC DG

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, to appear before it next Tuesday. The summons follows a petition accusing top Customs officials of refusing to retire despite reaching their mandatory service years.

Committee Chairman Mike Etaba emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that the CG must clarify the matter to Nigerians. The petition, filed by the Obasi-Pherson Help Foundation, alleges that some Assistant Comptrollers and Comptrollers have overstayed their tenure in violation of service regulations.

In a separate case, the committee has warned that it may order the arrest of the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) if she fails to personally appear before it. The dispute centers on a petition by Truid Limited, a private firm that claims NIMC breached a license agreement regarding a state-of-the-art software system.

Truid Limited’s legal counsel alleged that the firm was supposed to recoup its investment through an agreed revenue-sharing model, but the new NIMC DG has attempted to disrupt the arrangement. The committee chairman condemned the DG’s repeated absence despite multiple invitations and insisted that due process must be followed.

Both cases highlight the House’s commitment to accountability in public service, with lawmakers vowing to ensure compliance with regulations and contractual agreements.
