With Valentine’s Day approaching, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reportedly warned against the use of “money bouquets,” describing the practice as an abuse of the naira.
According to the apex bank, arranging banknotes into decorative bouquets falls under currency mutilation, alongside offences such as spraying, squeezing, selling, or defacing the naira.
The CBN Act stipulates that anyone found guilty of tampering with Nigerian currency is liable to a minimum of six months’ imprisonment or a fine of not less than ₦50,000, or both.
As enforcement efforts intensify nationwide, Nigerians have been urged to treat the naira with respect, avoid practices that damage or deface banknotes, and report violations to the appropriate authorities.
