Part of a storey building has collapsed in the Iyanaoloke area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, triggering an emergency response by rescue officials and residents.
One worker was reportedly trapped beneath the rubble following the incident, while another narrowly escaped without injuries.
Officials of the Ogun State Fire Service, alongside residents of the area, were seen at the scene making frantic efforts to rescue the trapped victim.
A resident, who identified himself simply as Sola, told our correspondent that the building gave way suddenly while work was ongoing.
“It happened all of a sudden. We heard a loud sound and saw part of the building come down. One of the workers ran out, but the other was trapped,” he said.
Another eyewitness said the collapse has caused panic in the area, attracting a large crowd of residents and passersby.
“People rushed here when they heard the noise. Rescue workers are trying their best to remove the debris,” the source added.
As of the time of filing this report, emergency responders were still working to reach the trapped worker. The cause of the collapse has yet to be officially determined.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as rescue efforts continue.
