In a landmark moment for Nigeria, 12-year-old Amazing-Grace Ahuoyiza Ebiebi Salami is set to make history as the first Nigerian to participate in the renowned Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The young spelling prodigy earned her place after emerging champion of the inaugural Spelling Bee In Nigeria (SpIN) competition.
Salami, a student of Greenpath Preparatory School, Abuja, will represent Nigeria at the 100th edition of the prestigious event, marking the country’s debut appearance. This milestone places Nigeria alongside Ghana as the only African nations to have participated in the globally recognized competition since its establishment nearly a century ago.
Ahead of her journey to the United States, Salami paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The young scholar shared her excitement about competing on an international stage and the opportunity to connect with peers from around the world.
“I am grateful for the immense support I’ve received and I promise to represent Nigeria with pride and excellence,” Salami stated during the visit.
Hon. Dabiri-Erewa lauded Salami’s remarkable achievement, describing her as a beacon of hope and national pride. She underscored the importance of Nigeria’s participation in such global platforms, which contribute to enhancing the country’s international image and celebrating youth excellence.
“This is a proud moment for Nigeria. Amazing-Grace’s participation highlights the brilliance of Nigerian youth and the importance of investing in educational opportunities that put our talents on the global map,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
The NiDCOM boss reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young Nigerians and expand the nation’s global footprint through academic and cultural excellence.
Salami was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Kemi Salami, and Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director for Young Educators Foundation, the organization behind the SpIN competition, along with other members of the delegation.
As Nigeria eagerly anticipates its historic debut at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Amazing-Grace Salami’s story continues to inspire a new generation of young achievers, proving that with talent and opportunity, the global stage is within reach.
