House of Representatives Declares February 13 as Murtala Muhammed Day

The House of Representatives has officially designated February 13 as Murtala Muhammed Day in honor of the late Nigerian leader’s contributions to national unity and democracy.

Announcing the decision, Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized that the recognition was a tribute to General Muhammed’s patriotic and democratic role in nation-building. He assured that the National Assembly remains committed to honoring past leaders who played significant roles in preserving Nigeria’s unity.

General Murtala Muhammed, who was assassinated on February 13, 1976, during a failed coup, was instrumental in drafting Nigeria’s 1979 constitution, which paved the way for the country’s return to civilian rule. He also initiated the relocation of the nation’s capital from Lagos to Abuja by setting up a committee whose recommendations led to the historic move.

With this declaration, February 13 will now be observed annually in remembrance of is legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
