The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the Government and people of India following the devastating crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria conveyed its condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident and reaffirmed itsk commitment to global aviation safety.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with India during this period of immense grief and national loss,” the statement read.
Ebienfa confirmed that while initial reports suggest no Nigerian nationals were aboard the ill-fated flight, the Nigerian High Commission in New Delhi is closely liaising with Indian authorities to verify this information and offer consular support where necessary.
The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming at least 265 lives, including passengers, crew, and residents of a nearby medical hostel struck by the falling aircraft. According to Indian police sources, the death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue their operation amid the smouldering wreckage.
A lone survivor has reportedly been found, offering a glimmer of hope amid the devastation. Local journalists witnessed harrowing scenes of charred debris and bodies being recovered, with the aircraft’s tail section left dangling precariously over a damaged building.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “heartbreaking beyond words” and assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway to uncover the cause of the crash and prevent future tragedies.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai confirmed to reporters that 265 bodies had been transported to local hospitals by Friday morning.
Nigeria reiterated its call for a thorough, transparent inquiry into the incident and pledged ongoing support to international efforts aimed at enhancing aviation safety standards worldwide.
