Nigeria’s Super Eagles were knocked out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday night after suffering a 4–2 defeat on penalties to host nation Morocco in a tense semi-final encounter.
The highly anticipated clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat ended goalless after 120 minutes of intense football, with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough despite moments of promise.
Morocco, backed by a vociferous home crowd, dominated much of the attacking play and registered more shots on target, but Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced several crucial saves to keep the Super Eagles in the contest.
At the other end, Moroccan shot-stopper Yassine Bounou was equally impressive, denying Nigeria clear chances and maintaining the deadlock.
The match evolved into a tactical battle, with Nigeria’s disciplined defence frustrating the Atlas Lions, while Morocco’s high pressing unsettled the Super Eagles’ attack. Despite efforts from both teams, neither side could break the stalemate through extra time.
The semi-final was eventually decided by penalties. Morocco took an early lead in the shootout, while Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze saw his effort saved by Bounou.
Although Nwabali kept Nigeria alive by stopping one Moroccan kick, misses from Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved costly.
Morocco sealed the shootout 4–2, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters and booking their place in the AFCON final.
The victory sets up a blockbuster “Battle of the Lions” final between Africa’s top-ranked teams, Morocco’s Atlas Lions and Senegal’s Lions of Teranga. Senegal had earlier secured their spot by edging past Egypt in the other semi-final.
Morocco will now chase their first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1976, while Nigeria, last crowned champions in 2013, bow out after an impressive and resilient tournament run.
