Pope Francis Hospitalized in Rome

Pope Francis, 88, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for further treatment and diagnostic tests related to bronchitis, the Vatican confirmed on Friday.

The pontiff, who has been struggling with breathlessness in recent days, was hospitalized following his morning audiences. Due to his condition, he has delegated officials to read his speeches on multiple occasions.

According to the Vatican, the hospitalization allows doctors to “conduct necessary diagnostic tests and continue treatment in a hospital setting.” The pope has a history of respiratory issues, having had part of one lung removed in his youth.

This is not the first time Pope Francis has been hospitalized for bronchitis. In March 2023, he spent three nights at the same hospital and was successfully treated with antibiotics. Later that year, in December, he canceled his planned trip to the COP28 climate summit in Dubai due to another bout of the illness.

Beyond his respiratory issues, the Argentine-born pontiff has faced several other health challenges, including knee and hip pain, an inflamed colon, and hernia surgery. His ongoing health struggles have raised concerns about his ability to fulfill his demanding schedule.

Despite these challenges, Pope Francis has remained committed to his duties, continuing to lead the Catholic Church while adapting his workload to accommodate his health needs.
