Popular Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has opened up about how her public support for President Bola Tinubu during Nigeria’s last general election affected both her personal life and career.
The actress made the revelation while offering advice to fellow actor Timini Egbuson on strategies to improve the box office performance of his films.
According to Toyin, one of the most important lessons she has learned is for entertainers to avoid openly taking sides in politics.
“My main advice to you is simple: stay away from politics. Don’t publicly declare support for anyone. Focus on your work and remain neutral,” she told Timini.
When Timini reminded her that she had strongly backed Tinubu during the election, Toyin responded, “That was then,” acknowledging that her political stance had consequences. She admitted that the decision significantly affected her career.
“Haaaaaaa, it definitely affected me,” she said.
Earlier reports also indicated that in early 2024, Toyin expressed frustration after her film Ijakumo (Born-Again Stripper) allegedly suffered heavy piracy through widespread sharing on WhatsApp, which she claimed contributed to poor box office returns.
Reacting to the backlash she received online at the time, the actress questioned why her choice of candidate attracted criticism while others were free to support their preferred politicians.
“Why is it wrong when I choose my candidate, but it’s acceptable for others?” she asked, referring to the online trolling and boycott threats that followed her endorsement.
Sharing the conversation on social media, Timini wrote that he and his partner had visited Toyin to learn from her experience.
“Me and my partner came to collect orientation from @toyin_abraham. World best. This advice shock us o,” he added.
