The Nigerian football community has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Super Eagles winger and dazzling left-footed forward, Okwuchukwu ‘Allen’ Waobikeze.

His passing comes just days after the football fraternity bid farewell to ex-Super Eagles captain and legendary goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

Waobikeze, fondly nicknamed ‘Babaoo’ by fans and teammates, was admired for his powerful left foot, swift dribbling, and commanding presence on the flanks. While his appearances for Nigeria’s senior national team were limited due to intense competition within the squad, he etched his name into the annals of domestic football history. He proudly featured for top Nigerian clubs including Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC).

His death was confirmed on Monday by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, who shared the sad news via a heartfelt Facebook post.

“On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 pm CST,” Eli wrote.

He extended gratitude to friends, fans, and well-wishers who supported the family during the footballer’s final moments. “We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited my brother. Every funeral arrangement will be posted. Please keep our family in your prayers as we plan to send forth our beloved brother. God bless you all.”

Waobikeze’s death marks yet another loss to Nigerian football’s golden generation, as tributes continue to pour in for the late winger.
