The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commended one of its volunteers in Kano, Mr. Nura Abdullahi, for returning over ₦20 million forgotten by a co-passenger in a commercial tricycle, an act the corps described as “a rare display of honesty, integrity, and professionalism.”
Commander of NSCDC Zone 12, ACG Amos Abiodun-Taiwo, gave the commendation on Friday in Kano while presenting a formal letter of recognition to Abdullahi.
According to Abiodun-Taiwo, Abdullahi found the money after a co-passenger, identified as Alhaji Mustafa from Katsina State, mistakenly left the bag behind when he alighted from the tricycle. Abdullahi reportedly used the last dialed number on Mustafa’s phone after earlier lending him the device to trace and contact the owner.
The commander noted that returning such a large amount is highly uncommon, especially given the current economic hardship.
He highlighted that Abdullahi was not a full NSCDC staff member but a volunteer who, according to reports, did not even have ₦20,000 in his own account yet chose to act with unwavering integrity.
He explained that the command verified the incident and briefed the Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, who directed that Abdullahi be honoured as a model of honesty within the corps.
“This young man is a good ambassador of his family, the NSCDC, and Nigeria as a whole. If this were something negative, social media would have been flooded with it. Positive deeds like this deserve the same level of attention,” Abiodun-Taiwo said.
He urged Nigerians to emulate Abdullahi’s sincerity, stressing that moral values must be upheld regardless of economic pressures. “It pays to be honest. If he had taken the money, he wouldn’t have peace today. Parents should train their children well, and young people must uphold these values,” he added.
Abiodun-Taiwo further assured that Abdullahi would be “handsomely rewarded” for his exemplary conduct.
