In response to a brutal bandit attack that claimed 23 lives in Alkaleri Local Government Area, the Bauchi State Government has approved the recruitment of 2,100 local vigilantes to strengthen community security.

The recent assault targeted the Duguri and Gwana communities, leaving families devastated and heightening concerns over safety in the region. During a condolence visit to the affected areas, Governor Bala Mohammed condemned the violence, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable.

To address the growing insecurity, Governor Mohammed announced that the recruitment of vigilantes would commence in phases, starting with 300 operatives this week who will be deployed to frontline security duties. The Governor praised the bravery of existing vigilante members, noting their critical role in repelling attackers and neutralizing several bandits in the aftermath of the incident.

“The safety of our people is non-negotiable,” Governor Mohammed affirmed. “We are collaborating with the Federal Government and all relevant security agencies to ensure peace is fully restored across Bauchi State.”

Representing the State Commissioner of Police, DCP Muhammad Hassan Ahmed revealed that displaced residents have begun returning to their communities, while security operatives intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the attacks.

Community leaders, including the District Head of Duguri, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Duguri, and the District Head of Gwana, Alhaji Ahmed Sani Jumba, called on residents to remain vigilant and support security personnel by sharing credible intelligence to aid ongoing operations against criminal elements.
