The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that the official ECOWAS Excellence Award for Journalists will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 5:00 PM in Banjul, The Gambia.
Organised by the Directorate of Communication of the ECOWAS Commission, the prestigious ceremony will honour 12 outstanding journalists from across the 15 Member States, selected in four media categories: television, radio, print, and online.
The awardees were chosen for exceptional reports that highlight the tangible impact of ECOWAS initiatives on communities throughout West Africa. Their work underscores the crucial role of journalism in advancing regional integration, development, and public awareness of ECOWAS-led reforms and programmes.
The award ceremony is being hosted under the patronage of H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and will form a central part of the organisation’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
According to the Commission, the Excellence Award aims to encourage ethical and impactful journalism that contributes to strengthening the ECOWAS vision of “a fully integrated and prosperous region.”
The 2025 edition marks the inaugural launch of the award scheme, which is expected to become a recurring event aimed at promoting high standards of journalism and media innovation within the West African subregion.
