The Kano State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the tragic deaths of two students at the Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, following a suspected act of mob justice by fellow students.
The victims, identified as Hamza Tofawa and Umar Dungurawa, were reportedly assaulted with makeshift metal weapons known locally as “Gwale-Gwale” in a shocking attack believed to be punishment for an alleged offence.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, expressed outrage over the incident and directed immediate and transparent inquiry into the matter. Speaking through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Bashir Muhammad, the commissioner vowed that justice would prevail.
“It was reported that the brutal act followed a decision taken by some senior students to treat the deceased as punishment,” the statement read.
Muhammad, who visited the school in the aftermath of the incident, warned students against acts of jungle justice and urged them to report grievances through appropriate channels.
“You should avoid taking the law into your own hands. Always report any matter of concern to the school authority,” he stated.
On behalf of the state, Muhammad extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for divine comfort and eternal rest for the departed souls in Jannatul Firdaus.
Also speaking, Abbas Abdullahi, Director of the Senior Secondary School Management Board, described the deaths as devastating and unacceptable. He stressed the need for students to exercise responsibility and discipline, reiterating the government’s commitment to “leave no stone unturned” in unravelling the truth.
