NAWOJ Signs Landmark MoU with Plan International to Champion Women and Children’s Rights

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Plan International to strengthen advocacy for gender equality, children’s rights, and the empowerment of vulnerable groups racross Nigeria.

Speaking during the signing ceremony in Abuja, NAWOJ’s National President, Aisha Ibrahim, said the collaboration reflects the Association’s commitment to advancing the rights of women, girls, and children through advocacy, media engagement, and capacity-building initiatives.

“Today marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards empowering women and children. This partnership is not just a formality; it is a declaration of our united vision to create a society where girls and children can thrive, where their voices are heard, and their rights upheld,” she said.

Ibrahim emphasized that NAWOJ has long been involved in advocacy on humanitarian and societal issues, particularly those affecting vulnerable groups such as orphans, survivors of gender-based violence, persons with disabilities, and communities engaged in polio eradication efforts.

She noted that Plan International’s global track record in advancing girls’ rights and protecting children made the partnership significant. Through the collaborative ASPIRE Project, both organizations will implement capacity-building programs aimed at strengthening local women’s rights groups and youth-led organizations.

“By leveraging our media platforms and professional networks, NAWOJ will amplify the voices of these organizations, ensuring their advocacy resonates widely,” she added.

Representing Plan International’s Country Director, Charles Usie, the Director of Program Quality and Influencing, Helen Idiong, welcomed the partnership, stressing that the role of women journalists is critical in shaping narratives and elevating the fight for gender equality.

“We are a child rights organization deeply committed to equality for girls. No one can tell the story of women better than women themselves. With NAWOJ’s support, more women’s voices will be heard and their rights protected,” she said.

The event was attended by NAWOJ national officers, Zone D representatives, and executives of the FCT chapter.
