Former Chief Justice of Nigeria Tanko Muhammad dies at 71

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (rtd.), has died at the age of 71. He passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, just weeks before his 72nd birthday, which would have been on December 31.

The death was confirmed in Abuja by the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) in a condolence statement, where the association described his passing as a profound loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the country as a whole.

“Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return,” the statement read. NAMLAS praised Justice Muhammad’s integrity, humility, and unwavering dedication to justice, noting that his judicial career was marked by fairness, courage, and strict adherence to the rule of law.

Justice Muhammad served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 until his retirement in 2022, during which he was widely regarded for his measured leadership, judicial restraint, and commitment to upholding the independence of the judiciary. His tenure left a lasting legacy that continues to influence Nigeria’s legal system.

Beyond the bench, he was known for his mentorship of young Muslim law students across the country, earning a reputation as a father figure and source of guidance and encouragement.

NAMLAS extended its condolences to Justice Muhammad’s family, the Nigerian judiciary, the Federal Government, and the Muslim Ummah, praying for the repose of his soul.

His life and career remain a distinguished chapter in Nigeria’s legal history, defined by discipline, service, and devotion to justice.
