Omoyele Swore Joins Legal Team Defending Corps Member in Free Speech Controversy

Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has expressed his support for Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member facing criticism after her viral video critiquing President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Sowore announced on X that he had met with Uguamaye in Lagos and would accompany her, along with a team of lawyers, to her appointment with the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI).

In the video shared on Monday, Sowore stated: “The journey with youth Corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has commenced in Lagos. She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today and we will escort her to their offices. We are all en route with attorneys.”

Uguamaye sparked controversy after posting a TikTok video in which she criticized the country’s worsening economic conditions and the leadership of President Tinubu. Following the video, she claimed to have received threats and was summoned by the NYSC to appear before the LGI at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.

Sowore’s involvement has intensified public interest in the case, raising concerns about free speech and political dissent in Nigeria. The NYSC has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
