In a landmark move to broaden democratic participation, the United Kingdom government has announced its decision to lower the national voting age from 18 to 16, fulfilling a campaign promise made ahead of last year’s general elections.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner shared the news via her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, emphasizing that young people are already active contributors to society and deserve a voice in shaping the policies that affect their lives.

“Young people already contribute to society by working, paying taxes and serving in the military. It’s only right they can have a say on the issues that affect them,” Rayner wrote. “Today we’re delivering on our promise to give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote.”

The proposed legislation is expected to spark debates across political and civic platforms, as the UK joins a growing number of nations extending voting rights to younger citizens.

Further details on the rollout of the policy are expected to follow in the coming days.
