The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has fully restored train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route following a disruption earlier this week.

Managing Director Kayode Opeifa announced the resumption on X, assuring passengers of enhanced safety and improved operational standards.

“Following the incident, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” Opeifa said. “Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys.”

He added: “We are also pleased to welcome passengers on the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, with the support of HRH Alhaji Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko, Hakimin Idu District Head, Abuja. Train services are back to normal — safer and better.”

The NRC highlighted that its prompt response ensured minimal disruption and reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and service reliability.

The incident occurred near Asham Station, along a downward section of the rail line, involving train KA2, which had departed Rigasa and stopped at Jere before continuing its journey. After leaving Jere, a rear locomotive detached, rolled forward, and collided with the rear of the train.

The train, carrying 429 passengers, crew, and security personnel, recorded no fatalities. Several passengers sustained minor injuries and received immediate medical attention before the train continued safely to Idu Station in Abuja.

The NRC confirmed that the AKTS return trip from Rigasa has resumed successfully, signalling a return to normalcy for commuters along the corridor.
