The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a man over the tragic death of a three-year-old boy who drowned after falling into an uncovered septic tank in Durumi 2, Abuja.
The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on July 16, 2025. The suspect, Philip Jallo, a resident of the compound where the incident happened, was apprehended by officers from the Durumi Divisional Police Headquarters shortly after the boy was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
According to preliminary police investigations, the toddler had been playing within the premises when he slipped and fell into the open soakaway pit filled with human waste. Witnesses said the tank had long posed a danger to the community, and multiple warnings had been issued to the suspect to secure the hazardous opening.
In a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, the command accused the suspect of gross negligence, noting that the tragedy could have been prevented had he heeded neighbours’ repeated safety concerns.
“Despite several warnings from residents, the suspect failed to cover the septic tank. His inaction has now resulted in a needless and heartbreaking loss of life,” the police said.
FCT Commissioner of Police expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased child and urged all residents to take environmental safety seriously. He stressed the importance of securing homes and surroundings, especially in shared residential spaces.
“This devastating incident highlights the deadly consequences of neglect. We urge parents to remain vigilant and call on property owners to maintain strict safety standards,” the Commissioner stated.
Jallo remains in custody as police continue their investigation. The FCT Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring justice and holding accountable anyone whose negligence compromises public safety—particularly that of vulnerable children.
