President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of his late predecessor who passed away earlier this week.
The official announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held to pay tribute to the former Nigerian leader.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the renaming reflects the government’s recognition of Buhari’s service and legacy.
While full details regarding the implementation of the name change and any administrative adjustments remain pending, the decision has already sparked national conversations on legacy, memory, and education policy.
The former president, Muhammadu Buhari, served two terms from 2015 to 2023 and was widely known for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to combat insecurity in the northeast — a region where the renamed university is located.
Further announcements are expected from the Federal Ministry of Education and the university’s governing council in the coming days.
