Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after edging host nation Morocco 1–0 in a tense extra-time final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the 94th minute, when midfielder Pape Gueye struck the winning goal to break the deadlock following a goalless 90 minutes of regulation time.
The final was filled with drama, controversy, and late twists, including a VAR-reviewed penalty awarded to Morocco in stoppage time. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy produced a crucial save to deny Brahim Diaz, keeping his side in the contest.
“It was a game of fine margins. We believed until the end, and Pape delivered for us,” Senegal head coach said after the match.
Despite relentless late pressure from the Atlas Lions, Senegal’s defence stood firm to secure their second AFCON title in dramatic fashion.
Morocco had the golden opportunity to snatch victory in stoppage time after a controversial handball decision went in their favour. However, Diaz’s spot-kick was expertly saved by Mendy, sending the match into extra time.
“We created chances and fought hard, but football can be cruel sometimes,” Morocco coach Walid Regragui said. “I’m proud of the players for their discipline and spirit.”
Gueye’s extra-time goal ultimately sealed the victory, silencing the home crowd in Rabat.
