The House of Representatives has established an investigative committee to address the escalating local government crisis in Osun State, which has reportedly claimed multiple lives.

In a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by nine lawmakers from Osun, the House also called on the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS), and other security agencies to take immediate action to restore peace and stability in the state.

During plenary, the leader of the Osun State Caucus in the House, Hon. Bamidele Salam, highlighted that on February 17, 2025, violent clashes erupted across several parts of Osun. The unrest was triggered by an attempt to reclaim control of local government administrations by officials who had been removed following a court ruling in November 2022.

Hon. Salam described the situation as a serious breakdown of law and order, with reports of killings and harassment linked to political rivalries.

In response, the House urged the Attorney General of the Federation to provide legal guidance to all parties involved, emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes through judicial processes rather than forceful takeovers.

The crisis has raised concerns about political stability in Osun State, with lawmakers stressing the need for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of lives and ensure adherence to the rule of law.
