The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced a strategic partnership with CARE Nigeria, a subsidiary of CARE USA, aimed at improving the dissemination of weather and climate data to last-mile users and vulnerable communities.
Speaking during a meeting with CARE Nigeria’s Country Director, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, in Abuja on February 18, 2025, NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the critical role of climate information in disaster preparedness and response.
“Weather and climate data are essential for mitigating disasters. Through our partnerships with state governors and key agencies, we ensure that this information reaches those who need it most. Teaming up with CARE Nigeria, a globally recognized humanitarian organization, will further extend our reach to farmers, policymakers, and affected communities,” Prof. Anosike stated.
He also highlighted the increasing complexity of humanitarian crises driven by climate change and conflicts, stressing the need for climate-informed decision-making in poverty reduction efforts.
Dr. Abdu reaffirmed CARE Nigeria’s commitment to supporting climate-smart agriculture and disaster resilience programs. He praised NiMet’s efforts in providing critical climate information and expressed optimism about the collaboration’s impact on policy advocacy and sustainable development.
The two organizations agreed to formalize the partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive joint initiatives focused on climate resilience and humanitarian interventions.
