Federal Government Empowers 15,000 Wheat Farmers in Zamfara to Boost Food Security

In a significant boost to agricultural productivity, the Federal Government, through the National Agricultural Growth Scheme – Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), has provided essential support to 15,000 wheat farmers in Zamfara State under its Dry Season Farming Intervention.

Dr. Adamu Abubakar, the Zamfara State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, made this announcement in Gusau, the state capital. He stated that the initiative, launched in November and December of last year, is designed to enhance food security and reduce production costs for farmers.

Each participating farmer received a comprehensive input package, including 50 kilograms of wheat seeds and essential fertilizers such as NPK and Urea. The primary goal of the scheme is to provide subsidized agricultural inputs to smallholder and medium-scale farmers, thereby improving crop yields and ensuring a stable food supply.

“The dry season farming programme, currently being implemented, is a crucial part of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s broader initiative under the National Agricultural Growth Scheme – Agro Pocket,” Dr. Abubakar explained.

He further revealed that the program is structured in phases, with the first phase focusing on wheat production. The subsequent phase, set to commence soon, will target rice farmers, benefiting an additional 4,500 farmers in the state.

“The next phase of this initiative will focus on rice farming intervention, with preparations already in an advanced stage,” Dr. Abubakar confirmed.

He emphasized that the NAGS-AP scheme prioritizes the cultivation of staple crops such as wheat, maize, rice, sorghum, and soybeans. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on imports and enhance domestic food production.

Through this intervention, the Federal Government reaffirms its commitment to agricultural transformation, food security, and economic growth by equipping farmers with critical resources and support. The initiative is expected to strengthen local agricultural output, create employment opportunities, and bolster Nigeria’s overall food sustainability.
