The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has confirmed that all corps members are covered by a comprehensive insurance package throughout their service year, including both life and medical insurance.
He made this known in Abuja while receiving the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Ndace.
Nafiu highlighted the effectiveness of the insurance scheme by referencing past interventions. He revealed that ₦28 million was paid to support the treatment of a pregnant corps member who sustained a spinal injury, helping to save both her life and that of her unborn child.
In another case, ₦33 million was provided for prosthetic arms for a corps member who was involved in a road accident.
He further explained that the insurance coverage takes effect from the moment call-up letters are issued, even before corps members leave their homes for orientation camp.
The NYSC DG also urged journalists to verify information with the scheme to prevent the spread of misinformation. He emphasized that corps member postings are guided by national needs while prioritizing safety, adding that the NYSC remains apolitical and non-religious in its mission to promote national unity.
During the visit, Nafiu commended Ndace for his leadership at VON, while Ndace, in turn, praised Nafiu’s progressive leadership approach.
The Voice of Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with NYSC on youth-focused programmes and promoting corps members’ initiatives to a global audience.
