NiMet Partners with U.S Firms to Boost Nigeria's Biofuel Industry

As global efforts to achieve Net-Zero emissions intensify, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is exploring a partnership with U.S.-based Global Green Development Group and NOAH ReGen to support the Jatropha-To-Biofuel initiative in Nigeria. The project aims to revolutionize renewable energy production across ten Nigerian states, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During a high-level meeting at NiMet’s headquarters on Thursday, March 20, 2025, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He emphasized that the partnership aligns with NiMet’s mission of monitoring atmospheric conditions, analyzing climate data, and disseminating weather forecasts to support socio-economic development.

“NiMet has a vast network of climate change stakeholders, including over 70 million subsistence farmers in Nigeria. Through our Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) reports, we provide crucial climate insights to farmers and other users. By sharing our data, we can support the Jatropha-To-Biofuel initiative while enhancing our collective response to climate challenges,” Prof. Anosike stated.

Mary Flowers, CEO of Global Green Development Group, highlighted the importance of NiMet’s climate data in ensuring the project’s success. “Data is the foundation of this initiative. NiMet’s scientific records, spanning over a century, will allow us to accelerate our market entry and maximize impact,” she said.

Echoing this sentiment, NOAH ReGen’s CEO, Frederic Degret, described the Jatropha-To-Biofuel program as a key component of the Re’Planet Ecosystem, a United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)-backed initiative. He explained that the ecosystem is a game-changing financial platform designed to harness nature-based assets and carbon credits (NBACCs), helping nations unlock their blue carbon potential while structuring debt-for-nature swaps.

The meeting marks a significant step towards a sustainable energy transition in Nigeria, with NiMet’s climate expertise poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s biofuel landscape.
