The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has firmly refuted reports claiming that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates has been cancelled.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, WAEC dismissed the widely circulating claims as “false and mischievous,” urging the public to disregard them entirely. The council clarified that no such decision was taken in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education.

“The attention of WAEC Nigeria has been drawn to a fake press release alleging that the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates was cancelled due to examination malpractice and digital leakage of exam materials,” the statement read. “We wish to state unequivocally that this report is baseless, did not originate from WAEC, and is clearly the work of mischief-makers intent on spreading panic and confusion.”

WAEC confirmed that the marking of examination scripts has already been completed and that results will be officially released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.

The council emphasized that it maintains strict examination protocols and that any case of malpractice is handled individually, not by nullifying the entire examination.

WAEC also cautioned the public against trusting unverified sources, especially on social media, stressing that official information is only shared through its verified social media platforms and accredited media outlets. It reiterated that all press statements are issued through the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.

The rebuttal comes amid growing anxiety among students, parents, and educators following the viral rumour, which had sparked fears of academic disruption nationwide.
