As part of activities marking the 2025 Press Week, over 200 members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, staged a peaceful solidarity march to demand greater press freedom, protection of human rights, and improved working conditions for journalists across Nigeria.
Tagged the “Walk for Press Freedom”, the rally saw passionate members of the fourth estate take to the streets carrying powerful placards with messages such as: “Without a free press, truth is silenced”, “Censorship kills democracy — defend press freedom”, and “Journalists speak for the voiceless — support their freedom”.
Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, described the event as more than symbolic, calling it a bold statement that a free and independent press is fundamental to any thriving democracy.
“Today, we march not just as journalists, but as defenders of democracy, truth, and human rights. We send a strong message — press freedom is non-negotiable,” Ike declared.
She emphasized that the media plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, good governance, and accountability, especially in times of political instability and economic hardship.
Themed “Press Freedom, Democracy, Media and the Society”, this year’s Press Week highlights the essential role of journalism in protecting public interest and holding the powerful accountable. Ike urged journalists to remain resilient in the face of censorship, intimidation, and misinformation, while also calling on the government and civil society to stand up for press freedom and support journalists with better welfare and protections.
“We must resist all forms of media harassment and push for ethical, responsible journalism that uplifts society and defends democracy,” she said.
Planning Committee Chairperson, Mrs Evelyn Onyilo, echoed the message, stressing that democracy cannot flourish without an independent press.
“A free press is not a luxury, it is the foundation of genuine democracy. Journalists are not enemies — they are essential partners in progress,” Onyilo said.
Also speaking, NUJ FCT Vice Chairman, Ndambabo Yahaya, stated that the rally was aimed at reaffirming journalists’ right to operate without fear.
“Press freedom is not a privilege — it is our right. Without it, no other freedoms can truly exist,” Yahaya said, calling on government stakeholders to support and safeguard this right.
As the Press Week continues, NUJ FCT reiterated its commitment to standing strong against threats to media freedom and championing a society where all voices can be heard.
