Catholic bishops in Nigeria have expressed concern over the country’s escalating lawlessness, while urging citizens to remain hopeful despite mounting economic and security challenges.

In a joint Christmas message issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), the bishops noted that Nigeria is burdened by deep social and economic wounds, leaving many citizens fearful, exhausted, and uncertain about the future. The message was signed by CBCN President and Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji.

The bishops highlighted the devastating effects of economic hardship, widespread insecurity, displacement, and persistent violence, which have torn families apart, destroyed livelihoods, and claimed countless lives.

They specifically referenced the abduction of students and staff at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, calling it a painful reminder of insecurity affecting communities nationwide.

The anguish of families whose loved ones remain in captivity mirrors the struggles of many Nigerians living under constant threat.

Emphasizing the value of every human life, the bishops said those affected by violence are “lives of immeasurable worth,” each created in the image of God. They warned that the erosion of security continues to deepen fear and anxiety across society.

The bishops stressed that the birth of Christ offers hope and renewal, assuring that peace can be built, unity restored, and justice established when truth and human dignity are respected.

While acknowledging that injustice had wounded the nation, they affirmed that Nigeria’s challenges are not irreversible.
