The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned inter-city transport operators against arbitrary fare hikes during the ongoing Yuletide season.

In a statement, the Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, said the warning comes in response to a surge in consumer complaints nationwide.

While the commission recognizes that seasonal demand and operational costs may affect transport pricing, it emphasized that consumers are entitled to clear, accurate, and timely information on fares. Any fare adjustment must be transparently communicated and fairly applied.

The statement noted that complaints are surfacing at a time when fuel prices (Premium Motor Spirit) have reportedly decreased across the country, raising concerns over unjustified fare increases.

Commenting on the development, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello said the commission will closely monitor market conduct during the festive season.

He clarified that while price increases are not automatically illegal, exploiting consumers or taking unfair advantage of heightened seasonal demand could attract regulatory action under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. Violators may face stiff penalties.

Mr. Bello advised travelers to confirm fares before travel, keep proof of payment, and report any suspected unfair practices via the FCCPC complaint portal.

The commission has also intensified engagement with transport unions, park managers, and operators to promote responsible pricing, voluntary compliance, and orderly market behaviour.
