Aston Villa continued their superb Premier League form with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday evening.
The win marked Villa’s seventh consecutive league triumph and extended their winning run to ten matches in all competitions, keeping Unai Emery’s side firmly in the title race.
Morgan Rogers was the standout performer, scoring two spectacular goals that proved decisive. The result leaves Villa third in the table, just one point behind second-placed Manchester City and three adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Villa started on the front foot, creating early opportunities through Ollie Watkins and Rogers, though both chances went begging. Manchester United responded with a spell of pressure, with Matheus Cunha testing the hosts.
However, it was Villa who struck first just before half-time, courtesy of a moment of brilliance from Rogers. He expertly controlled a driven pass from John McGinn, glided past Leny Yoro, and curled an exquisite finish beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The lead was short-lived, as United hit back in stoppage time. A lapse in concentration from Matty Cash allowed Patrick Dorgu to dispossess him, and the loose ball fell kindly for Cunha, who calmly curled his effort past Emiliano Martínez to level the score.
United suffered a major setback at the break when Bruno Fernandes was forced off with a hamstring injury, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side short of creativity in midfield.
Ten minutes into the second half, Rogers struck again. Poor defensive organisation from United gave the winger time and space on the inside-left channel, and he made no mistake, bending another unstoppable shot past Lammens to restore Villa’s lead.
United came close to equalising shortly after, but Cunha headed wide from a pinpoint Dorgu cross. That chance proved to be their last meaningful opportunity, as Villa saw out the match to secure another vital three points.
