APC Wins Five of Six Chairmanship Seats in FCT Area Council Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in five of the six chairmanship positions contested in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, according to official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC declared that the APC won the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje Area Councils, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in Gwagwalada Area Council.

In Gwagwalada Area Council, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim was declared winner after polling 22,165 votes, defeating the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who scored 17,788 votes.

Announcing the result, the Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, said:

“I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship election held on February 21, 2026. That Mohammed Kasim of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

A breakdown of votes showed:

PDP – 22,165
APC – 17,788
APGA – 1,687
ADC – 1,366

In Bwari Area Council, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku won with 18,466 votes. The Returning Officer, Mohammed Nurudeen, declared:

“That Joshua Ishaku, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

INEC figures showed:

APC – 18,466
ADC – 4,254
ZLP – 3,515
In Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), incumbent chairman Christopher Maikalangu of the APC secured re-election with 40,295 votes.

“That Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,”
said the AMAC Collation Officer, Andrew Abue.

The results indicated:

APC – 40,295
ADC – 12,109
PDP – 3,398
SDP – 2,185
NNPP – 1,694

In Abaji Area Council, APC’s Umar Abdullahi Abubakar won with 15,536 votes, defeating PDP’s 4,547 votes, while ADC polled 37 votes.

In Kwali Area Council, APC candidate Nuhu Daniel emerged winner after scoring 17,032 votes, ahead of PDP’s Haruna Pai, who polled 8,575 votes.

Similarly, in Kuje Area Council, APC’s Danjuma Shekwolo clinched victory with 17,269 votes, defeating the PDP candidate who secured 15,824 votes, while APGA recorded 4,305 votes.

The results confirm APC’s strong showing across the Federal Capital Territory, with the party winning five of the six area councils contested.
