A young woman identified as Esther has reportedly died after visiting her boyfriend in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, sparking an ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
A resident of the area, identified as Dauda, told journalists that Esther had left her home under the pretext of going to a bank but never returned. According to him, her family only learned of her fate later that night through a phone call from a man who claimed to be her boyfriend.
“Esther left home informing her sister that she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei. She, however, did not return home,” Dauda said.
He added that the caller told Esther’s elder brother that she had visited him at his residence, where he reportedly bought her food. After eating the meal, Esther allegedly began vomiting and was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital.
“The caller stated that Esther had visited him at his residence, where he bought food for her. After eating the meal, she began vomiting, prompting him to rush her to Kubwa General Hospital,” Dauda recounted.
According to him, the man claimed Esther died while receiving treatment at the hospital. He further alleged that since making the call, the boyfriend had switched off his phone, as well as Esther’s phone, and failed to provide his name or address.
“He said Esther died while receiving treatment at the hospital. Since then, her boyfriend’s number has been switched off, same with Esther’s phone number. He didn’t also give his name or address,” Dauda added.
Reacting to the incident, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed that the case was under investigation. The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the authorities were aware of the report and were working to establish the facts.
“We are aware of the incident and we are investigating,” Adeh said.
Police have yet to release further details, including the identity of the boyfriend or the cause of death, as investigations continue.
