Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a thrilling berth in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging out defending champions South Africa 2-1 in a dramatic semifinal clash in Morocco.
Defender Michelle Alozie emerged as the hero of the night, delivering a stunning stoppage-time winner that left the Banyana Banyana reeling and sent Nigeria into yet another WAFCON final — their 13th overall.
The match, touted as a “Clash of the Titans” between nine-time champions Nigeria and current titleholders South Africa, lived up to its billing. From the opening whistle, both teams delivered a high-octane performance filled with drama, intensity, and moments of brilliance.
Nigeria dominated early proceedings, creating multiple chances but were repeatedly thwarted by the South African defence. A goal-line clearance and critical saves kept the Super Falcons at bay — until the 44th minute.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade broke the deadlock just before halftime, calmly converting a penalty after a South African handball inside the box, following a sharp cross from Folashade Ijamilusi.
But the second half swung in South Africa’s favour. Banyana Banyana pressed hard and were rewarded with a penalty of their own in the 56th minute. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from the spot, leveling the tie at 1-1.
As the game looked set to stretch into extra time, a moment of magic arrived. In the 94th minute, Michelle Alozie launched a looping ball into the box that beat everyone — including the goalkeeper — and nestled perfectly into the net, triggering wild celebrations on the Nigerian bench.
The Super Falcons will now face either Morocco or Ghana in the final, as they chase a record-extending 10th continental crown.
