The Katsina State Police Command has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of a 400-level student from the Federal University, Dutsinma, identified as Sa’idu Abdulkadir Amir. The incident, which also left a commercial motorcyclist injured, allegedly involved a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Reports indicate that the tragic event occurred on Sunday, February 23, 2025, when CJTF operatives mistakenly opened fire on the student and the motorcyclist, suspecting them of being informants for bandits. While Amir died instantly, the injured motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The killing has sparked widespread outrage among students, leading to violent protests across Dutsinma. Demonstrators have taken to the streets, setting vehicles ablaze and vandalizing property, prompting the university management to shut down the institution on Monday.
Confirming the incident, Katsina State Police spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, stated that authorities are actively investigating and working with the university management to apprehend those responsible.
“We are committed to identifying and arresting the suspects involved,” the statement read. “Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
The unrest underscores growing tensions over security operations in the region, as students and residents demand justice for the slain undergraduate.
