The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, over allegations of anti-party activities and ties to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.
Sumaila’s suspension, announced by the NNPP leadership in Kano State on Sunday, also affects three other party members—Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.
Addressing journalists in Kano, NNPP’s state chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, accused the suspended members of violating party principles by engaging in activities that contradict the party’s ideology.
“These individuals were elected under the NNPP platform but have chosen to betray the trust placed in them,” Dungurawa stated. “Their actions undermine the party’s values, leaving us with no choice but to take disciplinary measures.”
The chairman particularly condemned Senator Kawu Sumaila’s alleged disloyalty, citing his engagement with APC members, including their attendance at his daughter’s wedding and project inaugurations in Sumaila Local Government Area.
“What is even more shocking is the presence of key APC figures at these events. This clearly indicates where his loyalty lies,” Dungurawa said.
Despite the suspension, Dungurawa left the door open for reconciliation, stating that if the affected members acknowledge their mistakes and seek forgiveness, the party may reconsider its decision.
As of press time, Senator Kawu Sumaila and the other suspended members have yet to respond to the allegations or the party’s decision.
