A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna State has adjourned proceedings on the bail application of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to next week.

The adjournment followed arguments presented by both the prosecution and the defence during the hearing.

Counsel to the defendant, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail to his client, stressing that it is his constitutional right and necessary to enable him adequately prepare for his defence.

“My lord, the defendant is entitled to bail under the Constitution, and we believe granting this application will not in any way prejudice the case before the court,” Akpan argued.

However, the prosecution opposed the application, maintaining that the charges against the former governor are weighty and that granting bail could jeopardize ongoing investigations.

“The nature of the allegations and the stage of investigations make it imperative that this application be denied,” the prosecution submitted.

The presiding judge, after listening to both sides, adjourned the matter to a later date next week for ruling on the bail application.

Further updates are expected as proceedings continue.
