Peace Corps: Do Not Relent On Nation Building, Youth Empowerment – Akume

The Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume has advised the Peace Corps of Nigeria, PCN, not to relent in its task of nation building, youth empowerment, and voluntary services to better the country.
Senator Akume gave the advice in Abuja during the unveiling of the Organization’s logo to commence activities for it’s 24th anniversary with the theme: “2023 General Election: The Role of Youth in Security and Peace building”.

He also urged members of the Corps to continue in one spirit to take the organization to an enviable height.

The President, National Council of Women Societies, Hajia Lami Adamu expressed worry over the prolonged ASUU strike and the insecurity in the Country.

She said that such had contributed to heightened insecurity and idleness amongst Young people.

The National Commandant of the Corps, Professor Dickson Akoh pointed out that in spite of various challenges the organization had faced, it had made fundamental achievements.
According to Professor Akoh, a major achievement of the Corps was the passage of a Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Peace Corps by the 8th National Assembly in order to give statutory backing to this organisation. 

He expressed the belief that President Muhammadu Buhari would assent to the bill as soon as the National Assembly concludes it’s actions on the bill.

Professor Akoh listed other achievements by the Corps to include: establishment of branches nationwide, training and re-training of Officers and Members nationwide, Medical Outreaches and other voluntary community support programmes.
According to the youth leader, other activities earmarked for the anniversary celebration were: Media Interaction, visit to Correctional Center, Ceremonial Parade, Special Jumat Prayer, Special Church Thanksgiving and Peace Banquet.
