The Federal Government has announced plans to sell 753 confiscated housing units previously linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, offering them to Nigerians through its Renewed Hope housing scheme.

The development was confirmed in an official statement by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development after the Minister, Ahmed Dangiwa, and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, led a joint inspection of the recovered estate in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Largest Asset Recovery Now Set for Public Sale

The estate, covering over 150,000 square metres and comprising duplexes and other residential apartments, was recovered by the EFCC following a final forfeiture order granted by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on December 2, 2024.

Minister Dangiwa revealed that technical assessments and integrity tests would immediately commence on the buildings. Once certified fit for habitation, the homes will be completed and listed for sale on the government’s Renewed Hope Portal, which is currently operational.

“The government is committed to transparency, accountability, and providing affordable housing for Nigerians,” Dangiwa stated, commending the EFCC for what he described as one of the nation’s most significant recoveries in recent history.

Emefiele’s Bid to Reclaim Seized Estate Dismissed

In April 2025, Emefiele made an unsuccessful attempt to reclaim the seized estate, alleging that the EFCC concealed the forfeiture proceedings from him despite ongoing legal interactions. The court, however, dismissed his application.

Speaking during the inspection, EFCC Chairman Olukoyede emphasized the agency’s commitment to transparency, noting that the public had previously only seen aerial footage of the estate.

“This visit is to show Nigerians that the recovery is real. It represents the largest single asset recovery since the EFCC’s establishment in 2003,” Olukoyede remarked.

Renewed Hope for Nigerians Seeking Affordable Housing

The Federal Government’s decision to sell the recovered housing units to the public aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at expanding affordable housing access and promoting public confidence in the anti-corruption fight.

Dangiwa urged Nigerians to continue supporting the EFCC’s recovery efforts, assuring that assets seized from corrupt public officials would be repurposed for the benefit of citizens.
