The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has confirmed the rescue efforts following a viral video showing the plight of several Nigerians allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment in the Central African Republic (CAR).
According to the distress footage, the victims were deceived into traveling abroad, only to be abandoned and forced to work for 11 months without pay. Their travel documents were confiscated, leaving them stranded and unable to return home. The group called on the Nigerian government for urgent intervention.
Acting swiftly, NIDCOM established contact with the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui, the capital of CAR. Embassy officials promptly traced the individuals, successfully retrieved their seized passports, and began coordinating efforts to bring them safely to the embassy—a journey that spans over eight hours by road.
“The agent responsible for this ordeal has also been identified,” NIDCOM revealed in an official statement, applauding the Embassy for its prompt and effective response.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians in the diaspora and expressed deep appreciation to embassy officials for their swift humanitarian action.
